The 19th century saw the birth of the New England shoe industry. But today, Alden remains one of the few remaining factories, a private label shoe manufacturer.

Founded by Charles H. Alden in Middleboro, Massachusetts, the Alden Shoe Company has been making shoes since 1884. It is a traditional family business with around 100 workers who are part of the second or third generation of the family.

Although the Great Recession and overseas manufacturing took a toll on New England's shoe companies, Alden still operates in Massachusetts to this day.

Despite the decline of the American footwear industry, the company's high-quality dress shoes and orthopaedic and medical shoe designs helped Alden thrive.

Alden sources leather materials from small tanneries in Europe and the United States. It is known for using the shell Cordovan from the Horween Leather Company, an American company founded in Chicago, Illinois in 1905.
